You Are Here

I am sensitive to geography. I have geographical emotional memory. That is my way of saying I associate the physical spaces of things in my life with my life experiences that occurred in that place. If I have a dark memory of a place in space and time, I tend to feel dark and down when I revisit that place further into the future. Likewise, the opposite is true. If I know of a place that reminds me of joyful experiences, I will then feel excited and full when I revisit those spaces in the future. This is how it goes when I get the opportunity to hang in the St. Louis Loop during the noon hour.

I have been discussing the idea of geographical emotional memory with some of my close friends in my life. I have also been looking at the works of several "map artists" that specialize in using maps in their artwork. Maps can tell an emotional geographical story. This is my spin on the meaning of maps in my own work. To put it into a quote:

“I have an existential map; it has 'you are here' written all over it”

All the maps in these photos are of St. Louis.

P.S. If you are into maps in artwork, please check out the artwork of Mary Nasser.
